In the interest of environmental conservation, we have all made efforts to make our lives a bit “greener." This is usually translated as a change in lifestyle habits and the utilization of green energy products. Such is the effort made to be more environmentally friendly that we rarely query, if at all, the origins of these alternatives.
Green energy solutions, such as LED light bulbs, feature rare earth minerals. Despite the term, rare earths (neodymium, scandium, gadolinite, yttrium) are found in relative abundance in the earth’s crust, although most of the available “stock” is in China.
Political and economic debate aside,
New York Court: Anti-Fracking Decision
by Jessica B. February 27th, 2012 | Environmental News
The Town of Dryden, New York won its case to ban high volume hydraulic fracturing (or fracking) in their community. The case was considered to be important, as many other towns in the region have enacted similar town-wide bans on fracking. This had been hotly contested by drilling companies and some residents.
The drilling company, which had invested millions in developing Dryden for fracking and had signed land lease agreements, was hoping the court would find that state law, which considers fracking to be an acceptable practice, would supercede local laws. Thus the company could continue its drilling practices.

Campus Communities Go Green Too
by Jessica B. February 24th, 2012 | Environment
These days many small towns are working together as a community to maximize their green initiatives. College campuses can also work together to make huge steps towards green commitments as a part of their community as well.
Here is a list of community activities you can do to connect your campus to the local community around you.
1) Make sure your college is a member of The American College and University President’s Climate Commitment. This group works to keep university emissions under a certain established level, to demand universities develop and work towards an action plan, and to monitor progress over

Can You Tax People Green?
by Jessica B. February 21st, 2012 | Environmental News
While the European Union (EU) is a vast and diverse place, many of the countries there have been using taxes, for many years, as a way to stimulate green behavior. By this I mean they have high taxes on products, such as gasoline and airline travel, as a way to get people to naturally limit their own carbon emissions.
Recently the EU extended this taxation policy to flights from other nations in and out of the area. American, Chinese, and Indian airlines are fuming at the increased costs and have taken the EU to court.
The question remains though, will the

Laundry: Wash Your Hands of It
by Angela Yorke February 20th, 2012 | Household Hints
Laundry tends not to feature in a discussion about greener ways to do things. Yet, it’s possible to keep your clothes clean and fresh while reducing the impact on the environment.
The dryer is an item that uses a sizable amount of energy to, well, dry your clothes. Anything that uses electricity results in carbon emissions and contributes to global warming. To reduce the unwanted effect caused by this simple household chore, and to reduce the utility bill, dry your clothes outdoors. This works for as long as the weather permits; however, some neighborhood associations frown on laundry drying in
