Easy Ideas, Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

Planning a party for New Year’s Eve is not going to be easy. Going green for your party is even harder. Here are some tips to help you stay green on New Year’s Eve.

Keep it at home

Hosting a New Year’s Eve party at home is the first step to keeping it green. You’ll be reducing transportation emissions by encouraging carpools and having them stay over at your place afterward. They won’t have to worry about traffic, which could cause more transportation emissions. You’ll be saving money, of course, since you won’t have to spend enormous amounts of it (and time) to get food or drinks. You also get to control the waste products by keeping it in your home and properly disposing it the day after. Invitations also can be sent through email or text, thus reducing the use of paper.

Recycled Decorations

Use decorations from previous parties. Have family and friends donate decorations they haven’t used or have used but are in good condition. Or use recycled paper and make your own decorations.

Use glass, not paper

Use glass instead of paper or plastic cups and plates. Using glass automatically reduces the amount of waste that will normally accompany a big party. If you don’t have enough, you always can rent these. Look for a rental company online. If you can’t find a one or an affordable one, consider buying brands made of recycled paper, which must be properly disposed of after the party.

Organic and/or Local Food

Serve dishes made from organic food or locally-sourced food. Serve food that’s easy to carry and eat. Serve bread or crackers with easy spreads, like hummus or salsa (you can make it yourself). Serve cut-up fruits and vegetables. Visit your local farmer’s market for ideas.

Green Drinks

Don’t forget to serve organic or locally-sourced drinks. You can use organic vodka mixed with organic orange juice. Serve locally brewed beer. Research online for green cocktail recipes.

Cure the hangover

Cure your hangover the next day by detoxing with herbs and seasonings. Drink thyme or peppermint tea and plenty of water. Eat some organic free range eggs, bananas and stock up on fruit juices, too. Avoid coffee or burnt toast, since they don’t help anything.

Are there other ways you can think of to keep your party green?
