Recycling for the Holidays

November 18th, 2008 by Valerie Mae Diola

Since Christmas is fast approaching, I already started to put Christmas decors and Christmas tree up at home. As I was searching for my stuff, I saw my old stock of polymer clay, too. So, I thought I could still recycle the clay and turn them into Christmas tree ornaments.

While other people are now busy buying Christmas decor, I’m busy handcrafting Christmas tree ornaments. In my last article entitled 3 Rs for Christmas, I mentioned creating or recycling things into Christmas decor with your kids. However, I don’t have a child yet. So, I only made these by myself.

My friends were so delighted with what I made. I taught them how to make these ornaments, and now, I’m so happy to share this to all of you. Here’s what I did:

1. I gathered the old decor I have (small golden bells strung together). I cut the bells out of the string and fixed the broken ones.
2. I molded the letters out of polymer clays using an alphabet push-mold.
3. After molding the clay, I baked them in the oven at 130°C for 15 min.
4. After baking, I let them cool for awhile, attached the letters together to form the names using wires or rings, and attached the bell at the bottom.

5. After I finished forming the letters into names, I attached their strings and hung them on the Christmas tree.
6. Voila! Please have a look at the photo.

What I like about these ornaments I made is that I can feel my family is near even if they’re far from me. Upon looking at my Christmas tree, I remember all the people who are important in my life. This is how recycling can benefit me…and maybe you! After all, what else can make a Christmas tree prettier than putting every family member’s name on it?
